The key element in Adjaye’s strategy is a screen wall, based on a drawing by Chris Ofili, standing just inside the building.

This project was about making the entrance spaces to a Victorian library more inviting to the public. The key element in Adjaye’s strategy is a screen wall, based on a drawing by Chris Ofili, standing just inside the building. It transforms the atmosphere in this area and, with a mirrored ceiling, directs people to the reception desk or the café. In these spaces, and on the main staircase, the walls have been lined with recycled timber to the height of the screen, establishing a more intimate sense of scale.
