Architecture, Memory and the Making of Culture
What role does architecture play in shaping what we remember?
Museums and cultural institutions are often understood as places where history is preserved and presented. But the buildings themselves are also part of that story. They determine what is made visible, whose histories are given space, and how we encounter the cultures around us.
In this essay, we look at cultural architecture through four ideas: representation, recovery, production and civic life. From the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and MOWAA, to artists’ studios and civic museums, I explore how architecture can do more than contain culture. It can help create the conditions in which culture is questioned, produced, shared and remade.
