Today is the public launch of Hallmark House in Johannesburg
The iconic 17-Floor Post-Modernist structure is to be transformed into a luxury mixed-use building. Scheduled for completion in May 2016, the project will be the practice’s first significant residential development in Africa. Combining an African aesthetic with a contemporary vision, Hallmark House addresses changing lifestyles and new ideas for urban living. The 66-metre-high modular structure was originally designed in the early 1970s to house a growing diamond-polishing industry. Flexible and modular in structure, it will be transformed into a luxury residential tower with hotel, cultural and retail spaces.
“The transformation of Hallmark House is an opportunity to apply fresh thinking to urban communities and to create a new typology that reflects changing lifestyles and a more fluid approach to the way we inhabit cities.” David Adjaye.
